Collective Retreats to Open Seasonal Resort on New York’s Governors Island

Collective Retreats, the company behind portable, “asset light” luxury accommodations, plans to bring a glamping-style hotel to New York City’s Governors Island.

Governors Island, a 172-acre island just off Manhattan and Brooklyn, was once a military outpost and U.S. Coast Guard facility, but it was opened to the public in the mid-2000s, and has since become a popular day-trip destination for New Yorkers, with its open green space, historical buildings, art and cultural programs and incredible views of the city and harbor. But it hasn’t offered anything in the way of overnight accommodations to visitors except for an occasional pop-up option.

Enter Collective Governors Island, a New York City Retreat: Starting in May it will include luxury tents with private ensuite bathrooms, rooms fashioned from modular containers and premium bell tents with shared bathrooms, the company said.

The resort, which will be able to house about 100 guests, will also have on-site dining, including an option for a farm-to-table dinner served under the stars with views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor.

Collective Retreats said it had a multiyear license and will operate the Governors Island retreat from May to October. It said discounted weekday rates will start at $75 per night and a select-service model that starts at $125 per night.

“Since the inception of Collective Retreats, it has been our dream to have a presence in New York City,” said Peter Mack, founder and CEO of Collective Retreats. “We are thrilled to serve as the first hospitality brand to create an opportunity for New Yorkers and visitors to stay overnight and experience the beauty of Governors Island more deeply.”

The brand was unveiled last year and has resorts in Vail, Yellowstone and New York’s Hudson Valley — luxury camps that offer all the amenities and services of a luxury hotel, from 1,500-thread-count sheets to in-room massages, personal concierges and gourmet chefs. But they are portable, so they can be placed on the side of a mountain, in the middle of a vineyard or even inside special venues like museums, and they can also be shuttered or moved during off-seasons — hence the term “asset light.”
